Project 5

Project 5  Proposal

We have some residual funds from the charity walk of 2007. St John’s Church of Blackheath have a strong presence in Musoma. In association with them, we are proposing a project to have mobile van which can deliver much needed medical assistance to the neighbouring villages and also set up a medical clinic with basic resuscitation facilities etc which will be the base for this mobile unit.

The church will employ a doctors and other personnel so we will not be responsible for the day to day running of the project.

Members of the BSGDS and AOG have expressed desire to visit the area in Oct 2008 (around 2nd week) with a view to carry out voluntary work in the filed of medicine, dentistry, DIY, teaching and generally anything at all. Several medical students are eager to do electives in this area also.

We are looking to raise about £25 K for these facilities, As always, volunteers will pay their own way in total. We are hoping to stay in the Musoma areas for 4-5 days, Following that volunteers may wish to visit neighbouring Serengeti National Park and Ngorogoro Crater (at their own expense, of course).

We will be looking for some donations form dental trade and other societies A reputable Merchant Bank who are currently working with the BSGDS has expressed interest to also assist the project.

It may also be worth mentioning that the Tanzanian government had started building a new hospital in this area some 15 years ago. Sadly they run out of funds and the project was aborted. Half built skeleton of hospital with plans remain abandoned. Should there be a wealthy sponsor forthcoming with half a million to a million pounds sterling to donate this could be revived! Needless to say, the hospital would bear a suitable name.

If you wish to assist in any way please contact

About the Tanzania Development Trust

Registered Charity no 270462TDT is the charitable arm of the Britain Tanzania Society. It was established as a registered UK charity in 1975 with the aim of alleviating poverty in Tanzania through assistance with projects in health, water supply, education and community based self help activities.

We tend to allocate funds to the projects of a capital nature trying to ensure that the seed we sow both alleviates an immediate problem and does so in a way that future generations will also benefit, also acting as a catalyst encouraging project sponsors to go on and achieve more.

We like to see local contributions being made to the projects we support for the obvious reason that this sense of ownership enhances the chances that the project will work.
We believe that TDT can add value to the process of charitable giving to Tanzania through its experience and ability to identify, assess and monitor projects. This is enhanced through our network of members on the ground in various parts of Tanzania and the frequent visits by members from UK. There are no administrative costs charged by TDT – all inputs are on a voluntary basis.

Vocational Training for the Handicapped
Update on Britain Tanzania Society’s Ongoing Project (Musoma Engineering)

Vocational Training programme for handicapped people under the age of 25 has been in existence for a few years. On behalf of the BTS, I visited the project recently and was most impressed with the work that is being carried out under the helm of Denis Mahina (in photograph below with Dr M Vasant) The aim of this workshop is to help handicapped people and teach them a skill with which they can find work in the market place. When they “graduate” a basic tool kit pertaining to their skill is given to them which they can take away to start their vocation. For example, men will be given some carpentry tools whilst the ladies are given sewing machines with which to start their business. The scheme is highly successful (see following photos). Expansion programme is underway for which further funding is sought.
